Sorry for the reference to the old Bananarama song, but here's how things are going in Brownwood.
1. Mission attendance is way down, as are the offerings for August. I feel that this is temporary as some have been on vacation and others are falling prey to Satan's distractions, but still it can be discouraging. I am fully aware, though, that ups and downs are a part of mission work and general church ministry as well.
2. Mission advancement is challenging. Over the next few months I am going to work to teach the fundamentals about being a scriptural church, and even plan to introduce a church constitution and set of by-laws, as well as a church covenant, documents all prepared for one of our sister churches, as an example. I suspect with the watering down of Christianity, and how that watered down system has been prevalently taught in Brownwood, that there will be problems here. Hence, I have been very slow to move in this direction.
3. Missionary time continues to be strained. Due to the increasing workload of my job (namely trying to get the sales caught up), my time and ability to follow up and evangelize is being cut into heavily.
4. For the fourth time this summer, my home air conditioner is not working. It works fine as long as the temperature stays below 80 degrees outside. Here in Brownwood, it routinely tops 100.
Keep us in prayer, the next two years (the time table for being self-supporting) are going to be times of difficult transition.
God uses life's circumstances to transform us into the persons He intended on us being. Here's my journey...

Real Estate Frustrations
I can't explain it, but housing prices in Brownwood average approximately $20,000 more in Brownwood than they did back in Cherokee County, Texas. In Jacksonville, a good three-bedroom, two bath house might run you $69,000-$79,000. In Brownwood, you're looking at $89,000-$99,000. Some run as much as $105K to $125K... and these are 1,500-2,000 square foot homes. All are more than 30 years old.
To get into one of these homes, provided the bank can get the FHA loan to go through, will cost anywhere froom $8,000-$12,000 to close (down payment and closing costs included). Some of these homes have foundational cracks, the brick veneer on many of them is cracked, one of the homes even had rotting wood problems.
I think this market is inflated, but no one believes me. There is no reason these prices should be this high. There is no influx of people moving in (the rumor about Camp Bowie reopening has been proven to be just a rumor), no new-home construction, and the credit market is almost frozen. Oh, yes, credit.
Despite a solid payment history, a decent income and good references, the bank sees us as high risk. Perhaps one day I'll be able to have a 6-figure income with less than 10K/year in expenses. Maybe then, they'll see us as a viable mortgage customer. Of course, this is the same bank that wouldn't open a checking account for our mission unless we agreed to a $10/month service charge. Banking and real estate stink!

Saturday Evening Post
September has been a tough month for us in Brownwood. Though the Market Place ministry has picked up steam and done very well, we seem to have lost most of our momentum at the Brownwood Housing Authority, and have struggled to get our loosely-knit core group together in one place at one time.
One thing that amazes me is that wherever Jessica and I go in the ministry, Satan always seems to have his people there ready to oppose us. You can usually tell who these people are because they are the ones who vehemently oppose you straight out of the chute... even though they don't even know you. While I will decline to mention whom we are dealing with and in what area of the ministry we are facing opposition in, I will say that we are facing opposition on the field. (I know I have sparred with some of you on occasion on this and other blogs... I am not considering you opposition. Our opposition is coming from people who are here on the field.)
Present plans are to begin another apartment ministry on Sunday mornings, move the home Bible studies to Sunday evenings, and continue at Market Place on Wednesday evenings. We are also considering Tuesday night Discovery Clubs, but the where and how have not been decided yet.
Praises include the fact that Lee is home from the hospital and feeling well, Rachel and Joshua are growing spiritually, and that God has kept our needs met. Prayer request include God's opening of doors, our wisdom to enter those doors, and our housing situation.
BTW, I just got word from the city that a new manufactured housing community is going in behind our home, and that the main entrance to this new addition will run through my front yard. This has me rather uncomfortable due to the fact that our kids like to play in the front yard. Jessica and I are reviewing the best course of action that will protect the safety of our children, and work out for the best for us, our neighbors and landlord.
Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

Mission: Brownwood update
Things have been hectic around the Acker household as we prepare for our move to Brownwood. Here are some highlights.
1. Weekend in Brownwood. Jessica, the kids and I spent last weekend at our new house in Brownwood, getting things moved over and getting familiar with our surroundings. A Sunday morning observation is that most of our neighbors did not go to church. We met one neighbor, and his children, who were walking their dog as we were walking ours. I think this man is a strong prospect.
We also held a family worship service in our new home. We sang praises to God, and my little family makes a pretty good choir, if I say so myself. The kids really got into it, as did Jessica and I.
2. Moving day update. Bro. Charles Swilling, pastor of Rocky Springs MBC (my sponsor) will reserve a 24' UHAUL truck this week. We will load it May 23, and move it May 24. Hopefully, all we'll need to move then will be the washer and dryer, couches and bedding.
3. Future plans. After we get moved May 24, we will take some special family time to recoup from the long transition we have just endured. Since November, we have faced the prospect of finding employment and getting relocated. Getting the job at Wendlee solidified our moving date, as did securing the lease on this house. However, the "limbo" period has taken its toll on my wife and kids. We need this, because it will be the last breather we will be able to take for a while. We have only one year to assemble a solid core group of believers who are committed to becoming a self-supporting, missions-oriented New Testament church.
We will begin holding services in our home June 8, and will launch the Parents of Purpose group shortly thereafter. We plan on holding a Vacation Bible School in our "backyard" (We don't really have a backyard, we have two side yards) sometime in July. Watch these boards for development on those two projects.
The purpose of Parents of Purpose and Backyard Bible School are to engage prospects to disciple and bring into our core group. We can always use volunteers, so if you are interested, call me at (903) 625-1005, or email gracepointembc@aol.com. I think it would be good to be able to hold a public launch the first Sunday in January (New year, new beginning, new church). A lot of evangelism and discipleship has to happen between now and then.
4. Availability. I have been asked to speak at a couple of churches in June. I plan on committing to holding services in my home on Sunday mornings in June, however, I will be available for deputation on Sunday evenings as long as you are within 5 hours of Brownwood. I am also available on Wednesday evenings in June only. I begin my new job in July, rendering Wednesday evening appointment unfeasible.
5. Building program. While Victory Life backed out of the lease agreement and sale contracts, they are still open to selling us the building at $180,000. (Basically, they don't want to committ to anything in writing until they see the color of the money, which is understandable in this day and time.) That being said, I will continue to seek funds for the purchase of the building. Should they sell it before we have the money raised, then I'll be at peace knowing God's will is done. There are two other church properties for sell in Brownwood at this current time. All three are good for new churches with good location, so we'll have options.
The Dec. 1 deadline is no longer in effect, and supporting churches now will be able to take time to observe how God builds the congregation in Brownwood before investing in them. This also allows the new congregation an opportunity to play a role in the acquisition of property. I still maintain, however, that once we get a congregation, if we are able to secure a building and pay for it quickly, it will serve as a testimony that God is working in our church.
So, "The Big Challenge" continues, just not with a Dec. 1 deadline, or a committment in writing. Please send offerings to the Mission: Brownwood building project c/o Rocky Springs MBC, PO Box 1840, Jacksonville, TX 75766.
I know the trend in church planting is toward portability (not having a facility, renting a temporary facility and setting up every week). While I don't mind launching as a portable church, my observation of some of the other church planters in Brownwood is that prolonged portability can actually have a detrimental impact on the church.

Things are getting exciting
Spoke to the sales manager and my new supervisor at KPSM radio in Brownwood. The crew there seems to be really excited that I am joining the staff.
I am also waiting on the documentation of employment so we can close on the house. This deal still has not been finalized, but I feel that it will and I am really excited at the possibilities.
In September 2007, there was no movement toward a new church going into Brownwood, yet today, it seems as if it will be a real possibility very soon. God is opening so many doors, and while he has not paved my way with golden bricks, I know that the road follows his will over the hills on the horizon. It is just amazing to watch everything fall into place.
As soon as we get closed on the house, we'll begin moving in. Once those plans have been finalized, we will begin meeting with our prospect families and looking for meeting facilities.
Jessica and I have located a wonderful meeting facility, which I will share the details with you later. If this facility is to be used to launch the new church, we will need God's help through you to make it a reality. Jessica and I are going to pray about it more, then we'll try to involve you.
I can't wait. Let's get it started!

Job offered
KPSM offered me an advertising sales position. They offered an above average commission with no base salary. Basically, if I sell well, then I'll be better off. If I don't sell, I have no safety net.
Still, I think this will be a great position for me. Now it's all a matter of getting the housing deal done.

Mission Brownwood March 08 Report
March 2008 Report
God is continuing to open doors in Brownwood, Texas
Progress continues to be made toward getting onto the field in Brownwood, Texas. As it stands now, Jessica and I placed a down payment on a four bedroom, two bath home just one block away from Brownwood High School, a Class 4A school located in Brownwood’s “Southside” neighborhood, the largest residential area in Brownwood. The fourth bedroom opens to the outside with double doors and is suitable for holding services for a small group.
Employment developments are also happening, as the editor of the local newspaper still expresses an interest in hiring me. I followed up with some of the local radio stations, one group said I could consider myself hired, the local Christian station will interview me next week. For those who are reading these reports for the first time, I have an extended resume in newspaper and radio communications, including news reporting, editing, on-air work and advertising sales.
Response continues to be enthusiastic from the local community about the prospect of a new church launching in the area.
Deputation report
Deputation continues through May, as I will relocate to the field as soon as school lets out. My goal is to get the work started June 1. I will not be available for deputation after June 1. In the early days of a new work, I believe consistency is key, which can not be attained if I am continually absent for deputation appointments. If you are interested in having me present Mission: Brownwood to your church, call me at (903) 625-1005.
During March, we visited with Texas Avenue MBC of Abilene, TX, and Memory Lane MBC of Palestine, TX. We enjoyed great fellowship with both churches. Visiting the churches of our association continues to be a source of encouragement for me.
Financials
Bassett Road Baptist Church (Palestine, TX) - $1,000 (for facility rental)
Denson Springs MBC (Grapeland, TX) $50
58th Ave. MBC (Amarillo, TX) $69.72
Rocky Springs MBC (Jacksonville, TX) $150
East Side BC (Jacksonville, TX) $100
Muse MBC (Grapeland, TX) $200
Texas Ave. MBC (Abilene, TX) $200
Memory Lane MBC (Palestine, TX) $200
Expenditures:
Gasoline $170
Vehicle Maintenance $375
Postage $15.58
Housing $5,000
Thank you for your prayers and support.

What, I have some down time?!!!! Something must be wrong!
Wow! We have finished out 32-page tabloid magazine on the Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show for the Cherokeean Herald. I'm amazed we turned this entire project over in a day. I went to the show and took pictures, while writing one article. My managing editor did most of the pagination.
I still have a school board meeting to cover tonight, and a softball game (#2 Rusk vs. #3 Hudson) to broadcast tomorrow night, but I might get out of the Wednesday night game between Alto and Chireno. If that happens, I'll skip town for the day and head to Brownwood to continue my job hunt. My next target is the local Christian station. Maybe they'd be interested in a man who is passionate for God with the capabilities of working on-air, doing production and selling ads. (I can do promotions too! I don't do windows.)
Saturday was an interesting day. Jessica and I arrived at the soccer fields at 11 a.m. None of our parents were there, so Jessica teamed up with Rachel and I teamed up with Josh and we played 2-on-2 soccer. Josh and I were winning until I slipped on the wet ground and severely sprained my wrist. It's healing up nicely.
Our soccer day had more mixed results. My team (the Bumblebees) won 8-5 over the Jaguars. My wife didn't know her team's score (I had to work during that game), but she said, "I think we lost."
So, the Bumblebees are now 4-0 while the Purple Sky are 2-2 on the season.
The housing process is still going slowly. We've put down earnest money, but the mortgage companies are not responding with solid financial offers. I hope the deal goes through, but fear that it might fall through.

Comings and goings
I probably won't get to do much blogging until the end of next week. I have to spend this weekend covering the Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show. Today, I will spend much of the day at the show, then coach my soccer team's practice tonight. Tomorrow, I'll be at the show all day before broadcasting a baseball game tomorrow night. Saturday, I'll be at the show, coach a soccer game at 11:30, then go to the office to place all of my pictures and information on the pages in the newspaper. Monday, I'll have work and school board. Tuesday it's work and softball. Thursday it will be work and soccer practice. Friday, it's work and baseball. So, for the next week, it will be 12-18 hour days. Yes, I will be taking some time off after it is done.
See you in Brownwood.
Oh, by the way, we placed our earnest money down on the house in Brownwood, and we've submitted our financial documents to get final approval on the mortgage. It looks like this deal is going to happen!

What a weekend!
Friday, Jessica and I purchased the Home & Student version of MS Office 2007. I still can't get it to work, so I'm going to find someone with a CD so I can install it that way and use my product key.
Saturday, I worked the morning show at KWRW 97.7 FM, then headed to the soccer field. It was a topsy-turvy day in the soccer world. After soccer, we all went to Elkhart to the Memorial MBC barbecue, where Jessica got her first taste of wild hog. That was one of the best days of fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ in a while.
Then, it was off to Brownwood to plunk down earnest money on the house we are going to purchase. I also got the exciting news about Camp Bowie reopening.
Then, we came home and crashed.

We did it!!!
I paid the down payment on the 4 bedroom house close to Brownwood High School today. Please pray that we are able to successfully close the deal and that God will provide a job for me soon!

Housing update
Jessica and I meet with the property firm this weekend. We're trying to get the terms of this contract settled before I plunk down my down payment.

Housing
Jessica and I found a four bedroom, two bath house one block away from Brownwood High school at a price of $79,900. The property firm agreed to 30-year terms, with a 7% fixed APR, with a $5,000 down payment. A blessing and another opened door? Maybe, maybe not. After agreeing to terms and signing the initial paperwork, the property firm is now saying they will have difficulty getting us approved.
So please pray that this deal will come together without Jessica and I falling into a real estate pitfall.

Mission: Brownwood, more than Underwood's BBQ
If you mention Brownwood to anyone west of I-35 (which is not the holy highway, regardless of what certain charismatics are saying), they will ask you about Underwood's Barbecue, which is actually a Luby's style cafeteria establishment. So, in order to be able to intelligently discuss Underwood's, I bit the bullet and ate there one day... I recommend the fried chicken, BBQ beefsteak, and the chicken fried steak. Load up on the sides, too. They don't charge extra.
Here's where we stand with Mission: Brownwood. Jessica is mailing off an application for a house today. We have located a suitable home close to Brownwood High School. Hopefully, the credit report will come through okay and we'll be able to purchase the house on terms that we can afford.
The job situation is still up in the air, but Jessica and I are planning our finances in a way that we can live on a part time job until we can request state support in November.
More and more, it looks like we'll begin working out of our home until we get a congregation together that can finance their own meeting location.
More and more, God is bringing Jessica and me together to the same page as far as the Mission: Brownwood vision goes. It's exciting to see His hand working in this.
And yes, when we get to Brownwood, we'd be glad for you to visit... and yes, we can even go to Underwood's.
