Market Place Apartments Outreach

Every 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday evening at 4 p.m., I meet with residents of the Market Place apartment complex for an hour-long Bible study. Usually, between 12 and 15 residents will attend this study. Four are members at Grace Pointe, while the rest just attend the Market Place studies.

This ministry at this complex is a blessing, not only for me, but I can see God working in the lives of the residents as well. The faithful support of our sister churches and the MBA of Texas allow me the time to perform ministries like this, and for that, I truly thank you.

Hello, old friend

It's been more than a month since I've blogged. While I enjoy writing and sharing my thoughts and the exploits of the core believers at Grace Pointe, things have been ridiculously hectic over the past two and a half months.

We moved into the rented building at the end of May and held our first services there the first Sunday in June. We immediately went to work refurbishing the back rooms (now a kitchen and fellowship hall, both of which can double as classrooms.) We spent a lot of money at Home Depot and several late nights painting walls and installing floor base (also called baseboard.)

Brothers Mike and John Johnson installed new vinyl composition flooring in the back rooms, as well as carpet in the hallway and nursery.

At the beginning of July, Jessica, the kids and I had to go to Colorado to care for Jessica's mother. We were there for two weeks. While it wasn't really a vacation (we were doing home health), we did enjoy a slowed down pace of life for a while, and got to see the top of Pike's Peak. While I was in Colorado, the operations of KSTA basically fell apart, especially in regard to Sunday programming. One Sunday, the WireReady automation software failed to load the Sunday programs... which is not all that uncommon... but no one caught it until well into the day. Other problems later arose when the person responsible for recording the programs failed to record them in the proper file format.

This is one of the latest in a long series of frustrations that has hindered our mission work. The inability of the station to properly operate during automated hours causes me to have to spend my "off time" (which is when I do the mission work) repairing issues with the radio station.

Three Sundays were horribly botched, and that has had a negative effect on the well being of the station. So, when I returned to Brownwood, I had that mess to clean up... as well as preparations for the Southwest Mission Rally and VBS.

The Southwest Mission Rally went very well. Following a great weekend of fellowship, we hurriedly resumed VBS planning, and finding that a number of our volunteers were falling off due to various reasons, we had to reformat VBS to be more of a youth seminar/presentation than a VBS. Think of it as church camp where the kids go home every night. Attendance has fluctuated at VBS, ranging from six to 22 kids.

Church attendance at the mission is struggling as well. A lot of the regulars have become lax in their attendance, which means that I have to do more follow up, which further strains evangelism efforts.

Notwithstanding all of this, the work at Grace Pointe continues, and will continue and God will see His church established in Brownwood. As we see more challenges, we are getting together (Jessica, myself and several of the "members") and praying and adjusting to overcome the adversities. I have heard that battles never go according to the battle plan... the same holds true in mission work. A mission project never goes according to plan. There are adversities, hurdles, attacks by Satan, heartbreaks and dissappointments. However, there are also sweet victories that come when you see lives changed and souls saved. AMEN!

So, be in prayer for us. We are transitioning now to empower and enable Grace Pointe to undertake the Great Commission given to the Lord's Churches, and we are looking at ways to transform the work in Brownwood so that the mission work here becomes even more robust, and more abundant than it already has become. I feel that if we work the fields, God will give an abundant harvest... so in the traditions of our agricultural ancestors, we'll work the fields from sun up to sundown, possibly later.

Thank you for your prayers, and to our financial partners, thanks for your financial support. We'll see you in Jacksonville in October, and Denison in November. Until then, here's hoping I can keep up the Mission: Brownwood blog better.

Mission: Brownwood Update

It looks like the door at Market Place might be closing. There is increased hostility from many of the residents being directed toward my wife and my children (and possibly me, but no one talks to me face to face about it), and attendance has been falling. We plan to begin having Wednesday services at the new building on Wednesday nights... but that won't likely start until August.

Awana is still going strong at Brownwood Apts Phase II, with 12 being in attendance Tuesday. We played Bible Bingo and found out the kids have been retaining their lessons and memory verses very well.

News from the Battlefield

We had 21 at Awana last night, and two workers. I praise God for the numbers, but with the number of kids, ranging from 2 to 9 years of age, and only having two workers, we're going to have to retool our Awana program to better meet the needs of these kids. Hey! Anyone want to come to Brownwood and join our work?

Catching up

We had a good week at Grace Pointe. We had 23 in morning worship, had a good day in the offering plate and kicked off a new sermon series on Matthew 24. (Yes, we will break from that series on Mother's Day. Summertime is bad for series, as certain holidays arise that people expect you to preach certain messages.)

The mission is excited about the new building, and we still plan to move in in June.

Midweek bulletin

We had 12 at Awana last night, with 5 first time guests. A couple of our core families were out for various reasons.

Beginning next Tuesday, I'll add, yet, another feature to my blog... "How-To Tuesday." Had it not been for the Macedonian Missions Conference at TBI when I was in school, I wouldn't have had a clue as to where to start in getting a mission work started. How-To Tuesday will feature observations and tips I learned the hard way, some that have been offered by those who have been there, and warnings about pitfalls that may come along the way.

Quick Update

We have one of our regulars at Market Place going to a nursing home and several others who are being hospitalized, so we only had 11 last night. It was still a great service. We had 11 in Awana Tuesday night. I'm working on commercial lease papers today for a church building on Hwy 84 in Brownwood, and will present the final draft to Grace Pointe and Rocky Springs this weekend for approval. Thanks for your support.

Market Place

We had 16 at Market Place last night, some of the best beans and cornbread ever, and a delicious pumpkin pie that was purchased from Owl Drug Store (Soda Fountain & Grill) in Coleman.

I preached about Palm Sunday, and how the Jews missed the point of the whole thing. We also miss the point many times.

Quick Mission: Brownwood update

We had 18 in Awana last night... 16 in morning services last Sunday. We are looking at the possibility of renting a vacant church building, starting sometime in the summer. Grace Pointe MBM has really progressed well over the past four months... I hope it continues!

Market Place has 18

We had 18 in attendance at Market Place last night as I preached on personal demons from Mark 1, while referencing Matthew 12.

Some of the Market Place attendees are coming to Grace Pointe Sunday morning, and I know they'll show up because they're planning a pot-luck!

It looks like God is really beginning to move things into place.

Monday Fun Day

Here's what's happening in my world today:

  • Since the main console at my radio station in Coleman failed, I got to do my morning show from our auxiliary studio in Brownwood. It felt good to be able to drive 10 minutes (as opposed to 40) to work, plus get to work alongside the rest of the employees in our company. Normally, I work out of the Coleman office, of which I am the only employee. It gets lonely there. Today, I felt more a part of the company because I was surrounded by coworkers.
  • The same holds true for church. If you lay out of church for a long time, you get discouraged. There is an encouragement that comes from gathering with other believers.
  • Filed a mortgage application today. Jessica and I hope to buy a house.
  • Today is Jessica's Birthday. She's 20-something.

Sunday, I start a new series on Community. I hope this next series will strengthen the mission's function as a body.

Hard Lessons

Today, I was confronted by God that I am doing too much of this ministry in the flesh. It was a hard morning. Everything was out of sync. We were running behind schedule, the cast majority of our core group was out, and we started services with only 8 people.

Prior to services, my wife reminded me that I am ministering for the Lord, and I needed to remember that and put things back into their proper perspective. Following her counsel, I went to an isolated place and repented. We started services on time and after about 20 minutes, one of our core families showed up. We wound up having 15 in services, but more importantly, we had services, which praise was sung to the Lord and His Word was preached.

This mission is not as far along as I want it to be, but I need to remember that God has prospered our efforts so far. Plus, I need to remember Psalm 127.

Here's hoping I don't have to keep learning this lesson.

Market Place Upswing

A number of the people in our Market Place ministry have recovered from their illnesses and are doing great. As such, we had 17 in attendance last night. Included in that number were a couple of visitors from Brady, Tex. who are helping in another ABA mission work.

Awana update

Two new kids attended and we had a total of 13 in attendance at Awana last night.

It's SUNDAY!!!!

I do believe that Sundays are my favorite day of the week, for it is on Sunday that I get to go to worship, draw encouragement from my fellow believers, preach the word, and see the fruits of God's working.

We had 14 in morning worship this morning. I gave the congregation some future options regarding a meeting place, to which they all agreed our proper course of action is to purchase some property and put a temporary structure (portable building) on it until we can afford to build. This is going to be interesting.

Praise God

We had 11 in services this morning, this in the face of one rather large family being out with the flu, and one regular being on vacation this week.

Of those that are being faithful in their attendance, I am noticing some rapid spiritual growth. So far, things are going very well at Grace Pointe.

Awanas kick off Tuesday night.

Youth ministry walk-through

We had our first youth program tonight at Brownwood Apts. Phase II. We didn't widely publicize it because we weren't completely organized yet, plus we wanted to try out a couple of things on our own children. All that was expected to show was our core group, which got sick. So, on our first night, we only had 5 in our mid-week youth program. Watch for this number to grow in the same fashion our Sunday morning attendance did.

Good Sunday at Grace Pointe

We had 16 in morning worship today, with one first-time guest. We also collected $102 in offerings.

I preached Matthew 3:13-17, and used the occasion of Jesus being baptized by John to preach on baptism. It was a good Sunday, with good worship and fellowship. It was also nice to be back in the double digits in attendance.

Tough week

We had one family out due to illness and another out due to a family event which left us with 6 in morning services.

We are in contact with new families in hopes that some will join. Things are looking up in 2009.
